In Flanders Fields the Poppies Blow...
"In Flanders Fields" is a famous war poem written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, who was serving in a Canadian artillery unit during World War One.
It is believed that John began writing his poem after losing his friend, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, who was killed during the Second Battle of Ypres in May 1915.
The mention of the poppy, 'the poppies blow, Between the crosses, row on row' in John McCrae's poem, was the inspiration behind the poppy being used as a symbol of remembrance that honours those who serve to defend our freedoms and way of life.
